Three-year-olds Midnight Lucky and Govenor Charlie scored maiden special weight wins over the Feb. 16-17 weekend at Santa Anita for trainer Bob Baffert. Both sophomores are by Midnight Lute and are grads of the Eisaman Equine training program.
Midnight Lucky was a runaway winner by 7 1/4-lengths on Saturday in her career debut. The gray or roan filly won under a hand ride from Rafael Bejarano, getting the 6 1/2-furlongs in 1:15.25. Midnight Lucky is out of Citiview, a full sister to Grade 1 winner Hookedonthefeelin.
The following day, Govenor Charlie won hard-fought one-mile contest by a neck in 1:36.28. The Mike Pegram homebred is 1-1-0 in two starts and has earned $44,800. The dark bay colt is a grandson of Silverbulletday, Pegram's Hall of Fame, two-time champion filly who won more than $3 million and 13 graded stakes in her career.
