Zee Bros was coming off a disappointing sixth-place finish in Churchill Downs' Derby Trial (G3) three weeks ago, but trainer Bob Baffert was looking for redemption for the 3-year-old son of Brother Derek, terming his Lang preparations “awesome”.
Zee Bros lived up to Baffert's expectations, zipping through a quarter in 22.65 seconds and a half-mile in 45.16. Martin Garcia kept the colt rolling through the stretch, winning by 2 1/4-lengths without ever being seriously challenged.
"This horse, we’ve been really high on him,” Baffert said. “In the Derby Trial he went real fast, the track was off, it was tiring. He got a lot out of it. We expected him to run a big race today.”
“My horse was just really fast," Garcia added. "Then what I did was try to keep it together, be comfortable, and then when I decided to go just let him go.”
Bred in Kentucky by Eisaman, Zee Bros has now won two of four starts, with one second. He has earned $106,814. Zayat Stables bought the for $270,000 from the Eisaman consignment at the 2012 OBS Spring Sale of 2-year-olds.
